Ever since it first appeared on the scene — flirting with a pre-emptive cancellation in the process — The Hateful Eight has been on the hearts and minds of Quentin Tarantino devotees across the interwebs. Just recently we learned more about the western’s ensemble cast, one which will bring together regular faces such as Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen and Tim Roth.
Incidentally, the upcoming tale of bounty hunters will also be Tarantino’s eighth major release, and though the auteur has spoke candidly about his retirement from directing in the past, he recently reaffirmed his plan to hang up the proverbial hat after his tenth film.
“I don’t believe you should stay on stage until people are begging you to get off. I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more. I do think directing is a young man’s game and I like the idea of an umbilical cord connection from my first to my last movie. I’m not trying to ridicule anyone who thinks differently, but I want to go out while I’m still hard…I like that I will leave a ten-film filmography, and so I’ve got two more to go after this.”
Ever the devotee to film, Tarantino also touched upon the planned 70mm release of The Hateful Eight and how, should the visual effects team achieve their vision, the western will be exemplify the power of cinema. In a quote that would make Christopher Nolan proud, here’s what the eclectic filmmaker had to say on the matter.
“If we do our jobs right by making this film a 70 mm event, we will remind people why this is something you can’t see on television, and how this is an experience you can’t have when you watch movies in your apartment, your man cave or your iPhone or iPad.”
