Hot on the heels of discussing his place among Marvel’s stars in the hotly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War, Robert Downey Jr. has switched gears to talk all-things-Avengers: Age of Ultron, including how he believes the upcoming sequel can act as both a beginning and an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking to Empire, the actor touched upon how Joss Whedon’s film will transition the comic book action from Phase Two to Phase Three, as Marvel prepares to usher in a whole new band of superheroes.

” ‘Age Of Ultron’ feels like a beginning and an ending,” Downey Jr. tells the magazine about the movie that will help wind down Marvel’s Phase Two. “In the script there’s a lot of references to that – it’s the ending of the beginning, the beginning of the ending – and honestly, what I was marvelling at in being there, back and forth to Shepperton and staying in Richmond up the road from Hemsworth and hanging out with Jimmy and getting to know Aaron Taylor-Johnson and all these new cast members, it’s just wild.

It’s just incredible what’s occurred and how part of the furniture of popular entertainment it’s become. It’s become the gold standard of this genre of filmmaking, and it’s just a bunch of really cool, nice, talented folks who are all kind of scratching their heads but will roll up their sleeves and say, ‘Okay, let’s not take ourselves too seriously but let’s continue to take this as seriously as we did when we were wondering if we should join the party.’ “

We’ve long heard of Marvel’s purported plan to rotate key members of the Avengers line-up, with the company even going so far as to say that film could conclude with an entirely new roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Whatever the case, what we do know is that the team will welcome Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to the action in their own atypical way, but it remains to be seen whether Whedon and Co. have any more aces up their sleeves.

All will be revealed when Avengers: Age of Ultron blasts onto the scene in time for May 1, 2015.
