Gotham has already introduced several characters that will play a key role in Bruce Wayne’s future vigilante career as the Batman, including Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Camren Bicondova), Harvey Dent (Nicholas D’Agosto), a handful of famous members of his rogues gallery, and even the Joker (Cameron Monaghan). Now, the series has added yet another important DC Comics character to the series: Lucius Fox.

Fox is, of course, Wayne Enterprises’ tech genius and its future President/CEO. He’s instrumental in Bruce’s nighttime crime-fighting hobby, as he helps design several of the Caped Crusader’s gadgets and weaponry. In Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, he was played by Morgan Freeman. On Gotham, his younger counterpart will be played by The Newsroom and 12 Years A Slave actor Chris Chalk.

Chalk will make his debut as Fox in the penultimate episode of the current season, with an option to return for a bigger role in season two. Deadline describes him as a “moral beacon” for young Bruce Wayne, who is currently butting heads with the current and corrupt Wayne Enterprises board. The report goes on to explain that Fox’s desire to help young Bruce “in a corporation shadowed by nefarious dealings [and] uphold Thomas Wayne’s legacy eventually will earn him a spot as one of the boy’s most important confidants.”

Lucius Fox is just the kind of character Gotham needs to balance the series’ scales between heroes and villains. His introduction will also help bolster the Wayne Enterprises subplot in the series, which is one of its strongest but has yet to take up much screentime.

Gotham returns from its current hiatus on April 13th, 2015. Chalk will first arrive in the series as Lucius Fox two weeks later, on April 27th.
