Now that Netflix has lifted the lid on viewing figures for some of the service’s original series, we’ve finally been given an indication of how each property is performing relative to the amount of subscribers that the company currently boasts. Published just yesterday, it was House of Cards and Daredevil that ranked the highest, with each show performing well amongst the Netflix faithful. However, if Joss Whedon had his way, the latter series may have skipped the small-screen format entirely in favor of a full-length feature film.
Speaking in an interview with IGN, the Age of Ultron director revealed that he lobbied the notion of giving the Matt Murdock character another crack with the moviegoing audience following the derided Ben Affleck-led film. Here’s what Whedon had to share on the matter.
“I fought for Daredevil to be a film instead of a TV show. Then under the auspices of Drew Goddard and Steve DeKnight… I’m dying to see the show but they released it just as I started the press tour!
“If the show’s working, the show’s working. Comic books are serialised entertainment and a lot of them lend themselves to TV shows as much or more than they do to movies… I like him because he’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller basically. So for me I didn’t think they’d be able to sustain that sort of mood on TV but TV has changed so much. It’s come up so much that I think it might just be the right place.”
Now that Daredevil has secured another season on the streaming service, is there a possibility this modern and dark take on the blind superhero could migrate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, even if it is just a cameo role?
