The Flash To Introduce The DC Multiverse In Season 2

One of the best things about The Flash is its complete devotion to its high-concept roots, as the series chooses to embrace all of the weird science fiction present in the source material. In just the first season, we've been treated to such things as Gorilla Grodd and time travel, and next year, it may get even crazier.

One of the best things about The Flash is its complete devotion to its high-concept roots, as the series chooses to embrace all of the weird science fiction present in the source material. In just the first season, we’ve been treated to such things as Gorilla Grodd and time travel, and next year, it may get even crazier.

Series star Grant Gustin recently opened up a bit about what we can expect to see in the show’s second season, and hinted that The Flash may begin exploring alternate dimensions and diving into DC Comics’ famous “Multiverse.”

“What’s fun about this show is that there’s going to be multiple timelines as we move forward. I think we’re going to start showing Earth-One and Earth-Two in the near future. There will be kind of different dimensions going on.”

The Multiverse can be complex and sometimes frustrating, but it basically breaks down to this: In DC Comics, there exist multiple parallel universes and realities, all of which shine a different light on the DC Universe. Earth One is the primary universe, while Earth Two is home to all of DC’s golden-age, World War II-era characters like Alan Scott’s Green Lantern and Jay Garrick’s Flash, as well as alternate versions of heroes like Batman (who’s Thomas Wayne instead of Bruce) and Kara Zor-El (who’s Power Girl instead of Supergirl).

Fans have already theorized that, while Warner Brothers is opting to keep its film and television franchises separate, they could co-exist in a Multiverse that may someday lead to big crossover events. For now, that phenomenon will likely exist solely on The CW, as it opens up a slew of potential complicated storylines for the other DC shows like Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Carlos Valdes, who plays Cisco Ramon on The Flash, admits that while the Multiverse idea will work well on their show, it could get trickier for things like Arrow‘s more grounded aesthetic:

“It gets a little Rubik’s Cube-y in terms of keeping consistency between all these timelines and whatnot, but the writers have their stuff together. If I were to trust anyone, it would be them.”

Complications aside, the introduction of the Multiverse could lead to some pretty exciting storylines on The Flash, especially if tonight’s time-bending season finale helps lead us there.
