The news comes from Season Zero and states that while the project is still in active development and is expected to film in Toronto, production on TNT’s Animal Kingdom – an adaptation of the Australian film of the same name – is happening in July, meaning Blackbirds will be postponed until the fall.

While disappointing, this news isn’t all too surprising, as we were expecting to hear about the series during the upfronts this year but didn’t get a single update from TNT or anyone at Warner Brothers. Aside from a few story details and a potential lineup, not much has been revealed about the show yet, and at this stage it’s far from a sure bet. Earlier this month, a Twitter account for the show’s writer’s room appeared online, but aside from posting a piece of Nightwing fanart, it hasn’t been very active.

Blackbirds will focus on Teen Titans members Nightwing (who recently graduated from the role of Batman’s sidekick, Robin), Starfire, Raven, Barbara Gordon/Oracle, and crime fighting duo Hawk & Dove. Like CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series, it’s not expected to tie into any of the CW’s DC shows (Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow) or the larger DC film slate.

As always, we’ll let you know of any updates to Blackbirds as they arrive. Warner Brothers has scheduled a panel for its various DC television adaptations for San Diego Comic-Con, so perhaps we’ll get more concrete information in the coming weeks.
