Back in May, NBC lowered the axe on Constantinethe supernatural DC Comics adaptation starring Matt Ryan. The show was shopped around to other networks shortly after, but showrunner Daniel Cerone announced in June that the series was truly dead.

Yet, against all odds, there’s a chance that Matt Ryan’s John Constantine will live again. IGN recently spoke with Arrow star Stephen Amell and executive producer Wendy Mericle, who both stated that Ryan could in fact show up in Star City when the series returns for its fourth season this fall. Amell and producer Marc Guggenheim have previously expressed their desire to see such a thing happen – but that felt like nothing more than a pipedream.

With the introduction of mysticism into the Arrow universe next season, the arrival of John Constantine would certainly fit, and according to Mericle, it’s something that’s certainly on the table:

“Yeah, we really want to do it. It’s something we’ve been talking to DC about and it’s just a question of some political things, but also the actor’s schedule. We’re trying to work it out, but we don’t know 100 percent if it’s going to happen… But we’re really optimistic and we would love to have him.”

Bringing Matt Ryan to Arrow to play Constantine would be the perfect way to soften the blow of the series’ cancellation – and expand the ever-growing CW/DC television universe (which already consists of The Flash and will soon encompass Legends of Tomorrow and an animated Vixen series) even more. Only time will tell if this actually comes to fruition, but our fingers are certainly crossed.
