John Constantine lives on - sort of. Matt Ryan's demon slayer is primed to make an "exciting" appearance in Arrow season 4.

NBC may have put paid to hopes of a Constantine season 2 when it dropped the supernatural season after just one season, but that hasn’t necessarily ruled out the chance for Matt Ryan to don the trench coat as the cocksure John Constantine once more. In fact, thanks to The CW’s burgeoning roster of DC live-action shows, the actor is primed to appear in Arrow season 4, and it’s set to be anything but a fleeting cameo.

In the words of executive producer Marc Guggenheim, John Constantine is set to play an “exciting” part in the upcoming season –  due to premiere in October – hinting that Ryan’s stint as the titular demon hunter will be extended for at least one more hour of network television.

Here, speaking to Superhero Hype, Guggenheim – who also serves as producer on The Flash and the nascent Legends of Tomorrow – touched based on the cameo and why he always considered Matt Ryan to be a natural fit for the foul-mouthed character.

“When you see him in the show, honestly it feels like we’re doing a Constantine/Arrow crossover, and it’s so exciting… We’re just really glad we got the chance to extend Matt Ryan’s run as Constantine by at least one more hour of television. I think you’ll see he fits very neatly into our universe. It never feels forced, it feels right. Stephen’s on screen vibe with Matt is just very natural, it’s as if these guys had been working together forever.

“I think people are really going to love the episode. John Badham (‘WarGames,’ ‘Saturday Night Fever’) directed it and it was just a happy circumstance, but John had also directed an episode of Constantine. It all works and it works really effortlessly. It worked effortlessly with a lot of effort I should say. I can’t wait for people to see that episode, if you thought it was a thrill just to see that one shot of Matt in the trailer wait til you see a whole episode with him.”

Ardent fans may have been holding out hope for a network to resurrect Constantine for a sophomore season, but at the very least, the upcoming crossover with Arrow will at least let us revel in Ryan’s devil-may-care rendition of the Hellblazer for a little while longer.

Starling City returns to the CW this fall when Arrow season 4 premieres on October 7.
