Production has kicked off in Cape Town, South Africa for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and to commemorate the occasion, Screen Gems has released a few official tidbits from the set; specifically, a round-up of the cast and the sequel’s synopsis.

Reuniting series stalwart Milla Jovovich with Ali Larter – on board to reprise her role as Claire Redfield – The Final Chapter is poised to do good on its evocative title and bring the curtain down on the studio’s lucrative video game franchise. Acting as the sixth and final film in the Resident Evil series, Screen Gems has confirmed that Paul W. S. Anderson will return at the helm. With Jovovich and Larter’s places secure, the final installment will also feature Iain Glen, Shawn Roberts, Orange is the New Black breakout Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, William Levy, and Fraser James.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will, much to the surprise of no one, see humanity on the brink of extinction – haven’t they always been since the original film in ’02? –  as Jovovich’s heroine Alice plots course for the scene of the original T-Virus crime: Racoon City. Intending on bringing down the Umbrella Corporation once and for all, Alice’s journey is made all the more difficult now that her superhuman abilities are on the wane. Will she be able to pull off the impossible? Read the synopsis to get an indication of her plight.

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is primed to conclude Alice’s gruelling, globetrotting plight against the Umbrella Corporation when Sony’s ultimate installment in the series lands on January 27, 2017.
