Following that briefest of teases the other day, AMC has premiered the first full trailer for Preacher, their small-screen take on the brilliantly bonkers comic series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon.

The trailer contains all of the intriguing flashes from that first teaser, but also gives us a much better idea of what to expect when the show debuts next year. In the footage shown here, we see a kid ask the reverend Jesse Custer to lay a beating on his abusive father, which leads to a little sermon about the futility of violence. We also get to see various shots of violent acts being committed – by Jesse himself, as well as Tulip (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun).

The Cassidy stuff on the plane is something that’s not from the source material, and may hint at a different origin story for the fan-favourite character. He’s also not wearing shades (they never leave his face in the comic), which is surely bound to annoy some fans. Aside from that, though, it looks like this adaptation is going to stay pretty faithful.

Preacher stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, Ian Colletti as Eugene “Arseface” Root, W. Earl Brown as Arseface’s father, Elizabeth Perkins as Vyla Quinncannon, Ruth Negga as Tulip, and Jamie Anne Allman and Derek Wilson as Betsy and Donny Schenck. Take a look at the first trailer above, along with the plot summary below, and let us know what you think.

Based on the twisted and popular ‘90s comic book franchise of the same name, “Preacher,” created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) embark on a journey to, literally, find God. The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for television by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (“This Is the End,” “Superbad,” “Neighbors”) and showrunner Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”). The series is set to premiere mid-2016.
