Zoe Kazan has reportedly been drafted in to replace Lisa Joyce in the lead role for Lena Dunham’s new series, Max. The show has secured a pilot for HBO, and the What If actress landed the role after Joyce departed following what Deadline are reporting to be “creative differences” over the future of the protagonist in the series.

Max is being billed as a “raucous” comedy, following enthusiastic magazine writer Maxine Woodruff as she inadvertently finds herself at the centre of an ambitious civil rights movement in the early 1960s. Whether she – or the world around the movement – are quite ready for what follows will form the basis of the early exposure in the pilot, and this certainly sounds like the kind of amusing yet significant shows that a network like HBO will be very keen to get to a full series.

As it stands, Max also boasts writing talent in the form of 7 Days In Hell‘s Murray Miller and will see Dunham – who will also stand as executive producer – rejoined by her Girls showrunner Jenni Konner. The pilot is expected to be aired in 2016.
