It’s been an awful long time coming – and for a while, it seemed as though it would never come at all – but Tom Hanks is set to reprise his role as religious sleuth Robert Langdon for Inferno, and today’s batch of official photos find the famed professor back on the case.

Filming on the long-gestating sequel largely took place in Venice, Italy, and the screenshots see Hanks’ character join forces with the likes of Felicity Jones and Sidse Babett Knudsen in order to track an elusive lunatic threatening to unleash biblical destruction by harnessing the power of a plague. It’s a high concept plot that involves amnesia, ancient artefact such as Sandro Botticelli’s map of Hell, and the titular Dante’s Inferno that appears to hold the answers to this emerging biochemical threat.

Here’s the official logline of Dan Brown’s novel:

Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s “Inferno.”

As the fourth installment in the literary series, Ron Howard’s depiction of Inferno is releasing despite the critical panning directed towards The Da Vinci Code and its mooted sequel, Angels and Demons. Couple this with the fact that those films released at a time when Brown’s series was sweeping the globe as a literary sensation and Howard’s Inferno faces an uphill battle if it is to win over an audience.

Slated for a release in 2016, Tom Hanks will be joined on the globe-trotting adventure by Felicity Jones, Sidse Babett Knudsen (The Duke Of Burgundy), Omar Sy, Irrfan Khan, and Ben Foster.

With Ron Howard on one side of the camera and Tom Hanks on the other, Inferno will race into theaters on October 14, 2016.
