We’ve know for quite a while that some incarnation of Azrael was going to get the small-screen treatment on Fox’s Gotham thanks to Showrunner Bruno Heller, and then following that we even got a glimpse of the character on set.

Those snaps seemed to spoil the identity of the man in the mask, and the synopsis (seen below) for the nineteenth episode of season 2 of the show now confirms it: Azrael is none other than Theo Galavan (James Frain).

A STRANGE DISCOVERY WILL BE MADE IN GOTHAM CITY ON AN ALL-NEW “GOTHAM” MONDAY, APRIL 25, ON FOX

Gordon and Bruce question Professor Strange about Project Chimera, which leads Strange to send the newly resurrected Galavan to confront Gordon. Meanwhile, Nygma investigates who Professor Strange is in the all-new “Wrath of the Villains: Azrael” episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, April 25 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Many fans predicted that Galavan would be the one to take up the mantle of Azrael – even after the villain’s untimely death in the midseason finale – but this strongly suggests that Hugo Strange will have a hand in his resurrection.

Gotham returns with episode 17, “Into the Woods”, on April 11. Will you be tuning in? Sound off below and let us know.
