Rihanna’s “Sledgehammer” orchestrates the galactic chaos in the latest trailer for Star Trek Beyond, Justin Lin’s tentpole threequel that will look to ring in the summer season in little under a month’s time.
Pushing the Enterprise crew far into uncharted territory, one eye-popping set piece later and Captain Kirk and Co. find themselves marooned on a remote alien planet. Far from home and the protection of the Federation, it is Idris Elba’s marauding nemesis Krall who aims to seize the opportunity, bringing ruination to the scattered Enterprise crew and everything they represent.
However you feel about the union of pop music and film trailers, Rihanna’s “Sledgehammer” works relatively well when set against the barnstorming action of Justin Lin’s threequel, and the song’s stirring high notes really help to emphasis the look of desperation plastered on the faces of Beyond‘s cast.
Speaking of which, it is Chris Pine that once again takes point as Captain Kirk – this time aiming to step out of his father’s shadow and carve out an identity of his own – joined by Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, the late Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim.
Let’s make some noise: Star Trek Beyond beams into theaters on July 22.
