Though it’s likely to undergo a name change closer to the time – so as to avoid a clash with Crackle’s new drama – Start Up is Zach Braff’s new comedy series that has now found a home at ABC.
Deadline has the scoop, confirming that the Garden State and Wish I Was Here will direct and star in Start Up, a project that will herald a reunion between Braff and Scrubs co-executive producer Matt Tarses. Indeed, it was Tarses who hatched the script, one based on Alex Blumberg and Lisa Chow’s titular podcast about the “human side of business.”
Braff, meanwhile, is due to make his long overdue return to serialized content, headlining Start Up as an Average Joe in “his mid-30s with a wife and two kids makes the crazy decision to quit his good job and dive into the brave new world of starting a business.” Tackling the good, bad and even the ugly head-on, it’s an elevator pitch that harbors a fair share of dramatic potential – on paper, at least – and it’ll be interesting to see who ABC choose to fill out the show’s nuclear family. John Davis and John Fox are among the producers attached, joining Gimlet Media’s Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber, along with Braff and Tarses.
Deadline didn’t disclose a production timeline for Start Up, but we’ll keep you updated nonetheless. Beyond single-camera dramedy, Zach Braff also has heist flick Going in Style in the tank – Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine star – though it was recently pushed back into 2017.
