Six years into their tenure as the finest modern-day sleuths in the business, Martin Freeman and lead star Benedict Cumberbatch are gearing up to reprise in Sherlock season 4, the latest – and potentially final – installment of the critically lauded detective series.

Eager to keep the San Diego Comic-Con momentum ticking over, PBS has today premiered a new look at John Watson (Freeman) and the good doctor himself (Cumberbatch). Gone are the moustaches that featured so prominently in Victorian spinoff The Abominable Bride, but don’t expect any let-up for our bickering duo going into season 4.

Sherlock may have fooled us all by covering up his own death during The Reichenbach Fall – outwitting even his long-time partner in crime John Watson – while Freeman’s character braved married life with Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington) only to discover that his beautiful bride to be was an assassin in disguise. It hasn’t been an easy ride, that’s for sure.

But with Sherlock season 4, Cumberbatch and Freeman will be locking horns with the devious Culverton Smith (Toby Jones). There’s also the small matter of Professor Moriarty, with the most recent trailer all but confirming that Holmes’ long-time nemesis will return to the fray come 2017, when Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss will once again be calling the shots behind the scenes.

Did you miss me? Look for Sherlock season 4 to make its bow across BBC One and PBS in early 2017.
