We’ve had quite a bit of casting news for CBS All Access’ new Star Trek: Discovery show over the last couple of weeks, but we were always told that the search was still on for an actress to play the lead role. Now, it looks like we finally have one. According to Entertainment Weekly, Sonequa Martin-Green has been chosen to play the still unnamed main character, who will be a lieutenant commander aboard the U.S.S. Discovery.
Martin-Green will be best known to most as Sasha on The Walking Dead, but she’s also appeared in the likes of One Upon a Time and The Good Wife. The 31-year-old actress will make history as the first African-American woman to lead the cast of a Star Trek ensemble.
So, does this mean we can kiss Sasha goodbye on AMC’s zombie drama? Well, EW maintains that Martin-Green is set to stay on as a series regular for the time being, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Tyrese’s little sister met with a nasty end in the not too distant future.
Martin-Green will join a crew that includes Doug Jones (Lt. Saru), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets), Michelle Yeoh (Starfleet Captain Georgiou), and Shazad Latif as a Klingon officer named Kol when Star Trek: Discovery premieres in May of next year.
