First Trailer For Freedom Fighters: The Ray Comes To Light

The great thing about the Arrowverse is that with it being so expansive, it hasn't limited itself to live action television and, in the past few years, it's also spilled over into the comic book realm as well as animation. When it comes to the latter, much success was found with Vixen, which was first presented as a web series that spanned two seasons before being cut together as one seamless direct-to-video movie.

Having gotten a taste for exploring other characters and possibilities that the TV shows may not have the time or budget for, the producers have since decided to branch out with their next endeavor, that being Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

Basically, it follows the adventures of a group of heroes residing on a Earth-X, a parallel world where the Nazis won World War II. As such, it’s home to its own corrupted version of the Justice League. And in keeping with the characters already established, some notable names making up the super team will be Nazi versions of the Flash, Green Arrow and Overgirl (Supergirl’s doppelganger in this universe), who’ll each be voiced by Grant Gustin, Stephen Amell and Melissa Benoist, respectively.

Here’s what executive producer Marc Guggenheim had to say in an interview published in TV Guide Magazine’s Comic-Con Special:

“It’s called Freedom Fighters: The Ray for a very specific reason, which is we knew we wanted to establish the Freedom Fighters and Earth-X. In Multiversity, Grant Morrison came up with an idea we really responded to: The Freedom Fighters are made up of various minorities targeted by Nazis – women, gay men, Jews. We wanted to honor that idea. At the same time, it’s an origin story about the Earth-1 iteration of The Ray.”

Learning how this this ties into Earth-1 is what we find to be especially intriguing, so we’ll all have to wait and see how that pans out. Perhaps we’ll be seeing more familiar versions of our favorite heroes showing up at some point? Only time will tell.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is coming soon to the CW Seed streaming service.
