Being someone who’s been a loyal fan of Supernatural since the pilot episode first aired all the way back in fall of 2005, I’m not ashamed to admit that I would have never predicted how long the horror series would endure. Even with creator Eric Kripke bowing out as showrunner after the fifth season, it’s somehow managed to keep us all on the edge of our seats, with season 13 set to commence in a couple of months.
As is the case with any long-running television show, one can’t help but wonder how much longer the party will last. Well, I guess we can put Sam and Dean Winchester in a club also enjoyed by The Simpsons because, much like that fan favorite animated series, there’s seemingly no end in sight when it comes to “saving people, hunting things, the family business.”
Speaking of which, The CW’s president, Mark Pedowitz, was asked at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour if an end to Supernatural is in sight. Here’s what he had to say:
“I can answer the Supernatural question now. As long as the boys want to do it [Laughter from the audience] and ratings hold, Supernatural will stay on the air.”
Quite frankly, unless the rabid fan base stops tuning in within the next year (something I don’t see happening), odds are we’ll keep traveling on “The Road So Far.” As for series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, they’ve previously made it known that they wish to hit the 300 episode milestone, which will happen as long as the show is renewed for a fourteenth season. That being said, it’s quite apparent they’re still passionate about the material.
Supernatural returns for its thirteenth season on Thursday, October 12 on The CW.
