Flanked by Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz), the Merc With a Mouth is currently whipping up a storm on the streets of Vancouver, Canada as filming continues on the set of David Leitch’s comic book sequel, Deadpool 2.
Buoyed by the landmark success of its cinematic predecessor – $783 million for a film that was initially written off as a creative risk is certainly not to be balked at – there’s a real air of confidence swirling around Fox’s 2018 follow-up, and the fact the Merc is arguably one of the most popular comic book characters in the world right now has led to the formation of a standalone animated series over at FX.
Headed up by Donald Glover (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Han Solo), the adult-oriented show was first announced back in May, during which time FX was riding high after Legion‘s warm reception. Three months later, and there’s still no mention of a firm premiere date for the animated series, but during the recent Television Critics Association press tour, FX brass John Landgraf confirmed that Donald Glover’s Deadpool project will be decidedly different from the movies.
News that FX and Donald Glover want their particular rendition of Deadpool to stand on its own two feet isn’t all that surprising, and chances are that “different tone and editorial voice” will foster the creation of a new storyline replete with its own villains – all the way maintaining ‘Pool’s irreverent spirit, of course.
Deadpool will be really different from the movies. It has a different tone and editorial voice. [We] wanted to make something distinctly different from the movies.
Comprised of ten episodes in total – for the first season, at least – Deadpool will likely be dragged kicking and screaming onto the small screen at some point next year. Deadpool 2, on the other hand, has been slated for June 1st, 2018.
