Tom Cavanagh Hints At Another Version Of Wells For The Flash Season 4

If one needs proof of the multiverse made flesh, look no further than Tom Cavanagh's Harrison Wells. In three seasons of The Flash, he's played several iterations of said character. Most notable of those was season 1's Reverse-Flash, who, as it turned out, was actually Eobard Thawne assuming the identity of Earth-1's version of the good doctor upon his murder.

If one needs proof of the multiverse made flesh, look no further than Tom Cavanagh’s Harrison Wells. In three seasons of The Flash, he’s played several iterations of said character. Most notable of those was season 1’s Reverse-Flash, who, as it turned out, was actually Eobard Thawne assuming the identity of Earth-1’s version of the good doctor upon his murder.

But after Thawne was defeated in the season 1 finale, the producers found crafty ways of keeping Cavanagh around, utilizing the multiverse concept to the fullest. The second season introduced us to Earth-2’s “Harry,” while the third brought in Earth-19’s “H.R.” Unfortunate for the latter, though, he also is no longer among the living, with the former being the sole survivor of the Wells we’ve come to know.

Now, according to Cavanagh himself, yet another may soon join the fold:

“This year, we’ve had a different villain and so I think there’s going to be areas that we could use a different Wells. We’re going to start with Harry and then find a way, I think, to try and get a different version of Wells in there, be it some version of Harry or whatnot as the season’s gaps present themselves. I mean, there is stuff that’s involved with this season that we’re talking about how Wells might become a different version of Wells, but I think that’s a storyline too far from me to give up.”

While it stands to reason that many viewers have come to love the actor, one has to wonder how many more versions of the character can be introduced before this game becomes tiresome. Maybe it’s for the better they just stick with Harry. After all, he’s more than intelligent enough to presumably match wits with the Thinker.

Interestingly enough, CBR presented Cavanagh with the possibility of somehow bringing back the actual Wells of Earth-1, to which he replied:

“When considering not just this season, but it looks like The Flash I heard contractually is going to run for the next 27 years… There’s room to like see what you can do with it, and that seems like an obvious one, but then I think it paints the writers into a corner a little bit, because — first off — he’s dead. He dead!”

The Flash returns for its fourth season on Tuesday, October 10 on The CW.
