The Duffer Brothers Confirm Stranger Things Season 3, But Season 4 May Be The Last

The Duffer Brothers – namely Matt and Ross – are already beginning to formulate a plan for the Stranger Things series finale.

Now approaching its second season on the airwaves – October 27th is the date for your diaries – Netflix’s nostalgic gem has fast become one of the more popular original series lining the company’s crowded roster, but in staying true to their original promise, the Duffers have no intention of allowing Stranger Things to overstay its welcome. A four-to-five season arc is in place, it seems, but while confirming the show’s immediate future to Vulture, the double act hinted that Stranger Things‘ fourth season may well be its last.

“We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out,” Ross Duffer told Vulture, but stopped short of detailing any additional tidbits regarding story and/or a production timeline. Granted, Netflix subscribers are yet to clock eyes on Stranger Things season 2, so it’s not all that surprising to learn that the Duffers are playing things close to their chest when it comes to the future of Will, Dustin, Eleven, Mike, Lucas and the rest of the gang.

When quizzed about the possibility of expanding the show’s scope beyond the perimeter of Hawkins, Indiana, Duffer noted that, “I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year,” which is a minor criticism that was often directed at J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise during its original run. Nevertheless, news that both Ross and Matt Duffer have a coherent story arc mapped out ought to ensure Stranger Things goes out on a high – regardless of whether that curtain call comes after four or five seasons.

Comprised of nine episodes in total, the second season of Stranger Things will be available to stream via Netflix on October 27th, making it the perfect Halloween treat.
