Per Diminishing Returns, co-director Eduardo Sanchez has outlined his preliminary plans for a TV adaptation of The Blair Witch Project.

It’s no secret that Hollywood has developed a peculiar fascination with TV adaptations based on the movies of old.

Quite often, those repackaged products crash and burn (see: Minority Report, Limitless, Crash), but there are exceptions to the rule. From The Exorcist to Fargo, Westworld to The Sarah Connor Chronicles, we’ve seen a whole host of dormant films find new life on the small screen, and if Eduardo Sanchez is to be believed, The Blair Witch Project could be the latest addition to the fold.

While appearing on the newest episode of Diminishing Returns (via Bloody Disgusting), Sanchez outlined his vision for a Blair Witch TV series. As co-director behind the 1999 classic, Eduardo Sanchez knows a thing or two about the goings on in Maryland Forest, and here, the filmmaker touches base on what a TV spinoff would look like:

For us, it’s a very natural thing to go and say, ‘Hey, let’s do a frickin’ Blair Witch show’. You can say it’s from the original creators and we can bring in a whole bunch of interesting directors to direct episodes.

It’s a project that would seemingly have no affiliation to the 2016 sequel whatsoever, though Sanchez appears to be fond of a potential Blair Witch anthology series, one that would swap in multiple directors in order to keep the scares flowing.

Well, you know, I can’t really discuss. I think that the idea of a Blair Witch anthology has always been very – just a really interesting thing. You’re close. You’re in the ballpark. You know, and I think it might be one of those things that might be – you know – the more you think about it, you’re like, ‘That might be the perfect… a TV show.’ You know? So, we’ll see what happens, but I think that’s the next big thing for Blair Witch. Probably TV.

Lionsgate is currently in possession of film rights to The Blair Witch Project, so while Eduardo Sanchez’s vision is sure to pique the curiosity of horror fans, this is far from a sure thing. Still, it’s fun to speculate, and you can chime in with your own thoughts and predictions via the usual place below.
