The first half of The Walking Dead‘s eighth season is set to draw to a close on Sunday with the midseason finale, titled “How It’s Gotta Be.” As well as the promo and sneak peak that arrived the other day, we now have 16 brand new images from the episode which hint at what we can expect from what will hopefully be an exciting installment of the hit zombie drama.

The photos, seen down below, highlight various characters hanging around Alexandria, revealing that Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon makes it back from the Sanctuary intact, after he crashed a truck into the side of the Saviors’ HQ last week. It looks like he’s going to have a chat with Michonne and also a tense confrontation with Dwight, too, as well as embarking on a stake-out in the woods with Rosita.

Apart from Daryl, the character who features most in this gallery is Carl Grimes, who looks set to aid his dad Rick on a mission. It’s interesting that the episode appears to feature Chandler Riggs’ character so heavily, as the latest TWD fan theory states that Carl is on his way out of the show, due to the actor’s recent announcement that he’s got a new movie lined up.

And let’s not forget that we’ve also been promised at least one massive surprise to come in the episode. During this week’s Talking Dead aftershow, host Chris Hardwick told fans that the midseason finale “will feature a shocking moment that everyone will be talking about next week.” Could it be Carl’s death? Or are we totally barking up the wrong tree?

The synopsis doesn’t offer much clarification, but it does further tease an “action-packed, emotional” hour of TV to come.

“Every story and battle from the first half of the season comes crashing together in this action-packed, emotional Mid-Season finale.”

Catch The Walking Dead “How It’s Gotta Be” when it airs on AMC this Sunday, December 10th.
