Gotham’s Fifth And Final Season Won’t Arrive Until 2019

This weekend brought some fantastic news for Gotham fans. After it was feared that the show was set for the chop, the Batman prequel was given a fifth season, after all. Unfortunately, though, there are some downsides to its renewal. For one, this will definitely be the last lap for Gotham, with the new run confirmed to be only 13 episodes long, which is just enough to push the total count to 100, the golden number which would make it viable for syndication.

As you might expect from its reduced run, the show will be held back for a midseason premiere. As reported by Deadline, FOX has released its schedule for the 2018/2019 season and it reveals that the final outing of the Batman-related series will kick off early next year.

While that might come as a bit of a blow for fans, at least we know that there’s more Gotham on the way. Even if we do have to wait a while longer for it.

Of course, the most important thing here is that the show now has the chance to wrap up on its own terms, instead of it being cancelled on a massive cliffhanger – the fate that we all dread for our favorite series. It sounds like this would have been exactly what happened if Gotham had been axed, too, as we’ve been promised that the upcoming season 4 finale will feature a “cataclysmic event” that will go so far as to “reboot” the show.

Exactly what this means, we’re not sure. But we do know that Gotham City is due to be torn asunder by Jeremiah’s explosive plans, with the lives of many of the main characters – including Selina Kyle, who was shot by the proto-Joker last episode – hanging in the balance. Thankfully, we’ll now get a new season with which to explore the after-effects of the upcoming Gotham finale, which is titled “No Man’s Land” and airs on FOX this Thursday.
