Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has experienced a swift fall from grace after incendiary Tweets made by the filmmaker in 2008 and 2009 were publicized by an alt-right media personality. In response to this controversy, Disney fired Gunn from the planned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a decision that has been met with a wave of backlash via social media, with many decrying the move as an excessive and hasty concession to a right-wing smear campaign.
Among the notable figures to voice their support for Gunn is David Dastmalchian. The actor known for playing Scott Lang’s friend Kurt in the MCU took to Instagram with a photo of himself and Gunn, along with Ant-Man director Peyton Reed. The post came with the following caption, thanking Gunn for his contributions to the Marvel franchise.
“I’ve been saying this FOR YEARS! James Gunn is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever known – both professionally & personally. there are so many people in our lives that we would never have known without the incredible magnet of talent & goodness that is James (& his awesome partner in life, Jennifer Holland). Thanks for making us a part of your family, buddy.”
Of course, Dastmalchian isn’t the only actor working under Disney to show solidarity with the director. Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista – who’s scheduled to reprise his role as Drax in the series’ third installment – has also Tweeted his disapproval of the company’s decisions to sever ties with Gunn.
“I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this.. [James Gunn] is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met. He’s gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He’s made mistakes. We all have. I’m NOT ok with what’s happening to him”
James Gunn has since issued a statement expressing regret over the pedophilia and rape jokes that prompted his firing. Meanwhile, the future for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains unclear, but as soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
