Gotham’s symbol of hope is ready to take center stage. And no, we’re not referring to a certain Caped Crusader – that’s a job for Matt Reeves.
Instead, we direct your attention to The CW, where Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti is developing a live-action Batwoman series in tandem with Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries), who is poised to write and executive produce the story based on Kate Kane, Gotham’s newfound protector.
It’s making steady progress, too, after CW president Mark Pedowitz turned in a status report via Deadline. Not only did he reaffirm that Batwoman will be making her debut by way of December’s DC/Arrowverse crossover, but Pedowitz confirmed that the female-fronted TV series – the first superhero project to feature an openly gay character in a lead role – is in the “early stages of development at this point.”
We’ll do a pilot for mid-season, whether it goes to series, I cannot tell you. We have five (DC shows) on the air and just added a sixth night.
As for the possible appearance of the Dark Knight himself, Pedowitz played coy, admitting that:
I can’t even answer that question. Batman already exists in the Arrowverse, because Thea Queen mentioned his name at one point.
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, look for Batwoman to begin filming early next year ahead of a possible release in the fall of 2019, by which point we should have a better read on that newly-announced Supergirl movie that’s set up shop at Warner Bros. and DC.
