When Gotham returns, the ante will be upped more than ever, as the Batman prequel show’s ending with its fifth season. There will be a lot to do in the next run, then, as Bruce Wayne and his friends and foes will finally transform into the versions of themselves we know from the legend of the Dark Knight.
While speaking to EW at San Diego Comic-Con, star David Mazouz was on hand to tease what we can expect from Gotham season 5. First off, he reminded us that Gotham’s been reduced to a No Man’s Land, a quarantined, isolated city that’s a haven for criminals and needs its heroes more than ever. It’s this extreme situation which will push the characters to where they need to be.
“Last season ended with the government showing its back to Gotham. It’s a dark island, little electricity, food, ammo, all that kind of stuff — this kind of situation brings out kind of the [characteristics] of all the characters that we know and it’s going to be very character-driven this year, and the characters are finally gonna become who we know them as.”
As for the tone and style of season 5, Mazouz couldn’t say much but promised that the shake-up to the status quo plus the lean 10-episode run will make for a final season that’s both “really dark” and “really fast-paced.”
“It’s really fast-paced, it’s really real, it feels really dark and — I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s really good. It’s a really good season.”
EW’s Samantha Highfill then pressed Mazouz on whether Gotham, in its hour of need, needs a certain billionaire to dress up as a flying rodent and act as its savior. “It does. It needs a bat,” said the young actor.
Of course, what every Bat-fan wants to see in Gotham season 5 is for Mazouz to actually don the character’s iconic cowl and say the magic words: “I’m Batman.” When asked if he’d be a little disappointed if he didn’t get to say the line, Mazouz admitted, “Yeah, course.”
Due to its short length, Gotham season 5 is expected to air in the 2019 midseason slot, and once we’ve got an exact premiere date, we’ll be sure to let you know.
