As much as the fans wish James Gunn would return to Marvel Studios, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that Disney is standing by their decision to fire the filmmaker from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with Gunn himself even finding new work in the DCEU. Nonetheless, we’ve heard it said previously that the studio still plans to use the writer-director’s script for the sequel, and according to a new report, the text packs an emotional wallop.
Slash Film’s Peter Sciretta took to Twitter to relay word from two sources who’ve allegedly read the script, both of whom were left with tears in their eyes:
“If I had somehow talked to two separate people, who somehow read James Gunn’s Guardians 3 script, and both told me that it made them cry, I probably wouldn’t be able to say any more.”
Seeing how the first two Guardians movies both had moments to leave viewers misty-eyed, it’s easy to believe that the story for the third installment was planned to continue the trend.
Of course, assuming this script ever makes the jump to screens, it’ll probably be a long wait before we can find out what people are getting so emotional over. Though actress Karen Gillan recently teased that she’s also had “a little teeny peek” at the script, the project is seemingly still in need of a director, and according to one report from earlier this year, the film may not even begin production until 2021.
Moreover, by the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 makes its delayed arrival in theaters, it’s likely that the script will have undergone some significant rewrites, not only in response to the various changes coming to the MCU in the next few years, but perhaps also to account for the absence of Drax, with Dave Bautista hinting heavily these days that he might depart from the property.
But regardless of what’s to become of the Guardians’ third standalone outing, Bautista has at least confirmed that you’ll see the characters in action again when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
