In the foreground of the one-sheet, Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) look ready for action. In the trees behind them, however, a group of Whisperers lurk in the shadows.

The composition of the poster sets up the chilling new threat facing the survivors when the show resumes. The creepy walker face-mask wearing weirdos are out to get the Alexandrians and their allies, as we saw in the midseason finale when one of them murdered poor Jesus.

Despite all the adversity they’ve fought in the past, though, the survivors won’t be prepared for the Whisperers, as they can blend into hordes of zombies and use their hushed tones to manipulate the monsters to go where they want. In short, they’ve never faced a threat like this. As bad as Negan was, at least you could tell him apart from a walker.

The Whisperers are led by Alpha, as played by Fantastic Beasts’ Samantha Morton, and her right-hand man Beta (Sons of Anarchy‘s Ryan Hurst). We got our best glimpse at the pair in a recent promo which also saw the Whisperers spying on our heroes through the trees, decreeing that they “don’t belong here.” Showrunner Angela Kang has promised that both Alpha and Beta will prove to be fascinating, formidable villains, while producer Greg Nicotero even thinks that Alpha may be the best villain TWD‘s ever produced.

We’re pretty sure that things are going to get dark when The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, February 10th, and we simply cannot wait to see what’s in store.
