With the Arrowverse due to adapt “Crisis On Infinite Earths” this fall, DC fans are hoping for some major multiversal crossovers. The dream is that stars from other DC TV shows will join in on the fun. Popular candidates include Smallville, Gotham and Titans and the latter in particular seems like a good bet, as both the Arrowverse and the DC Universe series are produced by Greg Berlanti.
However, it looks like we can cross a Titans team-up off our wishlist now, as we’ve been told that a crossover with the shows of the streaming service isn’t on the cards. Speaking to the assembled press at the Television Critics Association, The CW president Mark Pedowitz decreed that there’ve been “no discussions” yet for any sort of union between Titans and the Arrowverse shows to take place.
On the one hand, this isn’t surprising, as characters crossing networks often causes contractual and legal complications. Besides that, Titans and the Arrowverse have incredibly different tones, with the former being much darker and mature than even Arrow, the most adult of The CW’s superhero shows. Plus, the DC Universe isn’t interested in building up a connected universe or multiverse, as Titans, Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing won’t crossover much with one another.
All that said, this news is still a bit of blow, as the Arrowverse has previously managed to break down barriers and expand its shared universe in really cool ways. For example, both Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl and Matt Ryan’s John Constantine started on different networks – CBS and NBC, respectively – before becoming The CW fixtures.
Still, just because it’s not happening now, doesn’t mean it’s off the table forever. Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim was previously asked about this same topic and he replied that he’s learned to ‘never say never’ with the Arrowverse as it keeps on surprising him. Fingers crossed for some other treats in “Crisis On Infinite Earths,” then, which is said to be the biggest and most complex crossover yet.
