If you’ll remember, there was a rumor floating around last year saying that The CW would be developing a Superman show to include in its Arrowverse lineup. Unfortunately, that was swiftly shot down, but it appears as though such talks haven’t ceased behind the scenes.
Actually, this has been something the fanbase saw coming ever since Tyler Hoechlin debuted as the Man of Steel at the start of Supergirl‘s second season – and his unforgettable return during the “Elseworlds” crossover certainly fanned the flames.
According to a source close to We Got This Covered, not only is the network still considering a show headlined by Superman, but it’ll replace Supergirl in their prime time lineup if ratings don’t improve within the next year or two. And if you want more specifics, Elizabeth Tulloch would be expected to co-star as Lois Lane, effectively reprising her “Elseworlds” role.
If you were to ask me, this wouldn’t be too bad of an idea because Supergirl will have posted five or six seasons before the switcheroo is pulled. In a way, the Arrowerse’s old guard would be making room for a new wave of shows like this hypothetical Superman series, the upcoming Batwoman saga, and who knows what else.
It’s also worth pointing out how Big Blue himself isn’t absent from the world of television for too long in these past few decades. After Superboy (it was still Clark Kent, don’t forget) lit up the small screen during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman was hot on its heels. And before you knew it, ten seasons of Smallville swiftly followed.
Right now, I imagine this may confuse some of you due to the recent news saying Warner Bros. are prioritizing Supergirl over Superman – but it’s important to stress how that’s happening on the motion picture side of things. It’s often overlooked how the movie and TV divisions are two different entities.
In the meantime, though, be sure to enjoy Supergirl when it returns with new episodes on Sunday, March 3rd.
