Star Trek: Discovery Officially Renewed For Season 3

Star Trek: Discovery has officially been renewed for a third season on CBS. After a first run that was met with mixed reviews and fan reaction, most seem to agree that the show's found its feet with its latest batch of episodes. CBS must agree, too, because after almost universally glowing reviews for the first six installments, they've committed to continuing the winning formula.

One interesting caveat, however, is that showrunner Alex Kurtzman (who became the sole showrunner in season 2) will be joined in the role by Michelle Paradise, who was co-executive producer of season 2. Paradise seems to have made quite the impact, too, with Kurtzman describing her as a very important element of the show’s popularity.

“Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the ‘Trek’ legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward.”

It’s possible that she got a promotion to co-showrunner because Kurtzman right now has the extremely high-pressure job of ensuring that the new Picard series works as well as it should. CBS will presumably be wanting as much of his focus as they can on that show, which immediately became one of the most anticipated projects in the franchise’s history from the moment it was announced.

Despite the cancellation of the Kelvinverse movies after a pay dispute, the future’s still looking pretty rosy for Star Trek. We’re in the middle of a great season of Discovery, the Picard show will start shooting soon, there’s an animated Nickelodeon series in production and then, sometime off in the distance, is the fascinatingly strange notion of a Quentin Tarantino-directed Star Trek movie. We’ll have all the information on those – and whatever other Star Trekrelated projects CBS have up their sleeve – as soon it’s made available, so be sure to stay tuned.
