Not only has Disney and Marvel called time on its slate of Netflix series, but The CW last night confirmed that, much like Game of Thrones, Arrow‘s eighth season will also be its last. It’s an announcement that has sent shockwaves all across the four corners of the industry, with lead star Stephen Amell admitting that, while the show has enjoyed “one hell of a run,” it’s better to go out on a high.

Speaking of which, in a recent Instagram post, Amell offered a sneak preview of Arrow season 8, which will seemingly harken back to the show’s prime. The following pic arrived with the caption: “It’s been one hell of a run. I promise we’ll finish the way we started.”

As the undisputed cornerstone of The CW’s Arrowverse, this is a show that will be dearly missed, so we’ll have to savor every last episode – not to mention the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event still in the pipeline – before the curtain comes down on Oliver Queen’s TV reign.

Here’s the official joint statement from series producers Beth Schwartz, Greg Berlanti, and Marc Guggenheim:

This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind. We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.

The 10-episode eighth season of Arrow isn’t expected to air until the 2019-2020 season, but when it does, we’ll be bidding farewell to Stephen Amell and his memorable rendition of Oliver Queen.
