Fans Spot Hilarious Avengers Easter Egg In Captain Marvel

With the release of each new MCU film comes a new set of Easter eggs and nods to the rest of the cinematic universe. Captain Marvel, of course, is no exception, and with a recent post on Reddit, we see a surprising connection to 2012’s The Avengers. As those who’ve seen the film will know, Carol’s adorable cat Goose is, in fact, no cat at all, but an alien called a Flerken that’s capable of swallowing objects much larger than itself. So when the feline creature is presented with the Tesseract, storing the coveted Infinity Stone inside his body proves to be a cinch. After keeping the object safe for much of the film’s third act, Goose then spits up the Tesseract on Nick Fury’s desk, and for the next few years, it presumably remains under the supervision of S.H.I.E.L.D.

This brings us to The Avengers, and specifically, the scene where Black Widow is convincing Bruce Banner to join the team. As you can see in the below image, Natasha shows Bruce a picture of the Tesseract and offers a few details about what it can do, to which Bruce responds, “What does Fury want me to do, swallow it?”

Okay, so maybe it’s just a coincidence, or maybe screenwriters Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck and Geneva Robertson-Dworet really did take some inspiration from this little exchange when they had what Goose do what Bruce couldn’t. But whether intentional or not, it’s nice to see some payoff for Bruce’s tease seven years later.

In any case, as the other post-credits scene of Captain Marvel made clear, we’ll be seeing Bruce, Natasha and Carol together when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
