For what feels like an absolute age, Apex Legends players have been exercising patience in anticipation of the battle royale title’s first Battle Pass. Respawn Entertainment, to its credit, has taken steps not to raise expectation levels to the heavens, but in lieu of its relative silence, some fans have taken matters into their own hands either through wild speculation or data-mining game files. To blame Respawn for not delivering on the wants and wishes of players in the millions based on the latter certainly isn’t fair, but now, of course, we know exactly what’s included in Apex Legends‘ first season, and some fans are thoroughly unimpressed with what’s on offer.
As a means of venting their disappointment, folks have taken to social media sites like Reddit to provide a breakdown of exactly what’s included in Season 1: Wild Frontier and the apparent lack of value therein. One fan writes that, beyond a modest collection of character and weapon skins, Wild Frontier is rife with what they call “filler rewards,” that makeup almost half of the 100 proposed rewards. Badges and Stat Trackers are deemed the worst offenders, features that, according to the post, could just as easily been replaced with more exciting content like alternate executions and animated banners.
Whether or not the criticisms are considered valid will vary from person to person, but regardless of which side of the fence you fall, developer Respawn Entertainment has attempted to provide justification for the modest batch of content included in Wild Frontier, stating that:
We’ve tried to create a battle pass where first-time spenders can get a strong base of weapon and character cosmetics to fill out their initial collection at a deep discount. In addition, we’ve included our first ever three-stage evolving Legendary Havoc weapon skin (for veterans who are looking for the new hotness), as well as Epic and Legendary Apex Packs. These rewards are all in addition the 1000 Apex Coins you can earn through the battle pass, which you can put towards unlocking the next battle pass.
Will that be sound enough reasoning for skeptics still toying with the idea of buying in for Apex Legends‘ first Battle Pass? We’ll have to wait and see, but even if you decide against the purchase, you won’t be locked out of getting your hands on new character Octane, as the brand new Legend will be available as a standalone purchase.
