Lucasfilm Planning Third Live-Action Star Wars Show For Disney Plus

Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the company is mulling over the possibility of a third live-action Star Wars series for Disney+.

You wait years – if not decades – for a live-action Star Wars series and all of a sudden, three show up at once.

Sat atop the list of TV priorities for Disney and Lucasfilm is The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau’s hotly-anticipated spinoff that’s due to premiere on the Disney Plus streaming service later in 2019. You’ll no doubt remember that Cassian Andor of Rogue One fame has also been given a standalone series of his own, and it seems the Mouse House has no intentions of stopping there.

Per /Film, Disney chief Bob Iger spoke recently at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit, where he announced tentative plans for a third live-action Star Wars series set in that famous, far-away galaxy.

In the interim, we are producing two live-action Star Wars series for Disney+. One of them is called The Mandalorian, which is being supervised by Jon Favreau, and the other one is a bit of a prequel to Rogue One. My guess is there will probably be one more, at least one more, live-action series that we produce for Disney+, meaning a Star Wars series, before we release the next film.

Could it be that this new series will focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi? It’s been long rumored that Disney and Lucasfilm intend on continuing Obi-Wan’s story – regardless of whether it pans out across big screen or small – so there’s every chance Bob Iger is referring to the fan-favorite Jedi when he says that there may be at least one more live-action Disney Plus show before David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ film series begins.

So while we have The Rise of Skywalker to look forward to in December, Disney and Lucasfilm are well equipped for the impending Star Wars movie hiatus – for the record, the next saga won’t kick off in earnest until 2022. Not only do we have The Mandalorian slated for November 12th, but Rogue One favorite Cassian Andor will soon headline his own live-action TV show, before a third series debuts via Disney Plus.
