The final scene of Avengers: Endgame shook up the status quo in a major way as an elderly time-travelled Steve Rogers passed on his shield to Sam Wilson, meaning the former Falcon is now Captain America. It’s something that should have big repercussions for the MCU going forward. Specifically, the Falcon and Winter Soldier TV show coming soon to Disney Plus.
Speaking to Variety about why Steve chose Sam over Bucky Barnes as his replacement, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely reiterated the argument that the Russos have previously made – that Sam was the better choice as he has a purer soul, while the erstwhile Winter Soldier can be corrupted.
McFeely then went on to say that the decision was also made for the storytelling possibilities it leaves for the future. The duo aren’t involved in the TV show, but the writer thinks it should give the miniseries much to play with.
“That’s the thing that gets me the most is that it’s much better for both of their stories this way. Certainly Bucky getting the shield would provide lots of story. I don’t know if it gives Sam much story. And again, there’s a streaming show coming, right? And I don’t know what they’re doing but Sam having the mantle of Captain America, how he feels about that, and Bucky working or having some kind of relationship with Hydra, I think that’s pretty rich.”
The second Captain America himself, Anthony Mackie, recently spoke about what’s coming in the Falcon and Winter Soldier TV series. It seems he’s in a similar boat as the writers, with the actor commenting that he doesn’t know what’s coming in the show. As such, it hasn’t sunk in for him yet what a big deal it is to take over as Cap. The star said he’s waiting to get fitted for the suit, but in the meantime, fan art has imagined what Sam’s Cap outfit could look like.
Falcon and Winter Soldier will have Empire‘s Malcolm Spellman for showrunner. Rumors point to it being a spy thriller in the vein of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the movie that first introduced Falcon into the MCU, while Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Emily VanCamp’s Agent 13 are also thought to be involved. We’re guessing we’ll see it on Disney Plus sometime in 2020, with Stan saying it’ll film in October, but as soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
