Supergirl Movie Will Reboot The DCEU’s Kryptonian Mythos

Yesterday, we brought you the news that a source had informed We Got This Covered that the upcoming Supergirl movie will lay the seeds for a new incarnation of Superman to join the franchise later down the line, given that Henry Cavill is said to be done with the role. It’s worth emphasizing the other piece of intel we were told, though, which is that Supergirl will completely reboot the Kryptonian mythos in the DCEU.

This means that the next Superman, whoever he may be, won’t just pick up where Cavill left off – as we see with a new James Bond, for example – as the new version of the character won’t share any continuity with the series of films that began with Man of Steel. This comes hot on the heels of news that Matt Reeves’ The Batman will similarly ignore Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne.

This is just speculation on out part, but the fact we were told the Kryptonian mythos will be rebooted could mean that Supergirl will redo the destruction of Krypton. After all, it’d make sense, as we have to see how Kara Zor-El is sent from her dying homeworld to Earth to protect her cousin. However, it sounds like, if this is the case, the portrayal of events will be totally different from Zack Snyder’s interpretation. Perhaps with a recast Jor-El, Lara Lor-Van or even Zod.

Establishing that this isn’t following the continuity of the Cavill films in this way would then do the heavy lifting to allow a new Superman to appear in a potential sequel. The fact that Supergirl is said to be set in the 1970s is interesting, though. Does this mean future Superman movies will take place in that decade, too? Perhaps, as it’d certainly be one way to try and recapture the popularity of the Christopher Reeve films.

A recent report claims Supergirl could be shooting in early 2020, with casting news to arrive over the next few months. If that’s true, then we should learn more in no time at all and as soon as we get any further updates, we’ll be sure to let you know.
