Fans have been clamoring for a second season of The Haunting of Hill House ever since it debuted on Netflix almost a year ago. Unfortunately, though, it seems they’ll have to wait a little longer than they hoped. Filming for season 2 isn’t expected to begin until September, potentially meaning the next installment may not be dropping in 2019 at all.

While the first ten episodes were based off of Shirley Jackson’s book of the same name, the subsequent chapter in the series will shift away from the Crain family and instead focus on new characters. The Haunting of Bly Manor will be based off of Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turning of the Screw, which focuses on a governess caring for two children who becomes convinced that the remote estate they inhabit is actually haunted. It’s often heralded as one of the scariest tales ever written.

Despite the change in narrative, it’s still possible for the show to bring back the same actors. Much like American Horror Story, the Netflix original could opt to tell different scary stories every season while still bringing back cast members in different roles. It’s already been reported that Carla Gugino, who starred as the matriarch of the Crain family, may unexpectedly return for the second batch of episodes and her reoccurrence could prompt others to come back as well, if the showrunners ask them to.

Mike Flanagan is definitely set to return as director, but all of the other cast and crew details are currently under wraps. It still isn’t even known when the next season of The Haunting of Hill House will be released on the streaming platform. Fans have to be hoping for sooner rather than later, though the filming announcement makes it seem like new material is still quite a ways away. As always, though, watch this space for more.
