The final scenes of Supergirl season 4 set up the presence of the global network Leviathan in the Arrowverse, which will now be a key part of the fifth year of the show.
As fans will know, Leviathan have been around in DC Comics for several years and are the focus of a major event this summer by the publisher. However, Supergirl‘s producers have now explained that they won’t be emulating the plot lines from the source material.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner emphasized that Leviathan will be part of a more technology-focused season, with the duo saying:
“We’re putting our own spin on it. It really fit into what we’re doing [this season with technology], and so it was a happy marriage of us needing a big idea and there being a big dark organization for us to use”
This news lines up with the teasers we’ve had for the next run of the show, including a female version of Braniac-5Â and the depiction of the world’s obsession with their gadgets in the recent trailer. Furthermore, Queller’s explained that this season will be about how technology is turned against people, including what appears to be some sophisticated new devices from Lena Luthor. We’ve also theorized that Talia al Ghul will turn out to be the actual big bad this year, given her history as leader of Leviathan.
For those not in the know, Leviathan was introduced in 2011 by Grant Morrison and David Finch as part of their Batman run. Since then, however, Brian Michael Bendis has been crafting an epic storyline where Talia is herself being targeted by a Leviathan with an as-yet-unknown leader. Given the latest comments from the showrunners though, it’s difficult to know how much of this background will be used for Supergirl‘s take.
