Capcom Is Working On A Mysterious New Resident Evil Game

Resident Evil 2, despite launching all the back in January of this year, remains a frontrunner for Game of the Year for many. For diehard fans of the long-running survival horror series, it's a no-brainer. Capcom's staggering attention to detail in recreating Leon and Claire's escape from Raccoon City has set a new benchmark for what to expect from a remake and the genre as a whole. That being the case, it's not even remotely surprising that survivors of the doomed city and its tyrannic inhabitants are itching for more.

Currently, two projects are largely considered to follow in that game’s wake. Either a direct sequel to 2017’s experimental (and excellent) Resident Evil 7 or a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Right now, the path could diverge in either direction and, officially, at least, the developer has yet to announce either title. If recent events are any indication, however, that could all be about to change.

An email originally sent to Resident Evil Ambassadors in Japan and subsequently obtained by Biohaze has revealed an exciting development, to say the least. The email’s sender is none other than Capcom’s Division 1 – caretakers of both the Devil May Cry and Resi IPs – and reads thusly:

To all Resident Evil Ambassadors,

Thank you for your patronage regarding the Resident Evil series.

Today, we are letting you know that we are recruiting testers for a game that’s in development!!!

We are interested in incorporating the feedback of all Ambassadors into our development, so please read the details below and, if you are interested in participating, click the Entry button.

Biohaze notes that the play-test period outlined is due to be conducted sometime in September and is open only to members of the Ambassador program. What’s more, only those who have experience with the Resident Evil series as a whole are eligible, though to what extent isn’t stated. Taking into account all of the above, this particular event is far too specifically tied to Capcom’s flagship franchise to involve anything else.

And so we return to the original mystery. Is the project it wants feedback for Resident Evil 8 or a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis? Time will tell, but let us know which one you’d rather see come first in the comments section below.
