Godzilla Vs. Kong Director To Helm Event Horizon TV Show For Amazon

Amazon and Adam Wingard are developing a TV adaptation of the 1997 horror film Event Horizon, something we're all too happy to see happen.

Adding to their roster of new series, Amazon have signed on with Adam Wingard to produce a television version of the 1997 sci-fi horror movie Event Horizon. Wingard, whose credits include You’re NextBlair Witch, and Death Note, as well as next year’s Godzilla vs. Kong, will executive produce and direct the series. Meanwhile, the streaming service is partnering with Paramount Television to develop the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed Event Horizon into a show, building upon the recent genre success of The Boys and Good Omens.

In the original Event Horizon, a spaceship vanishes during a test procedure to create artificial black holes. The rescue mission discovers the re-materialized ship was transported to a hell-like dimension, picking up an evil presence along the way.

Having initially struggled at the box office, Event Horizon gained cult status on home video, in part due to its extreme premise and surprising amounts of gore for a major studio picture. There was even a lot more footage deemed too bloody for release, with a director’s cut reported to be unlikely.

Event Horizon cast

At this early stage, it’s difficult to say how Wingard will take on the source material, and whether the series will pick up as a sequel, prequel or something else entirely. There will definitely be consistency with the original film, though, via shared producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin, with Jeremy Platt also involved in the production. Wingard certainly has the visual chops for the material, although his recent work on Blair Witch and Netflix’s Death Note divided opinion.

Still, we’re excited to see what happens with Event Horizon, which if it gets pulled off could rank alongside Amazon’s recent success with The Boys. The streaming giant is also teaming up with James Wan for another small screen take on 1990s horror via I Know What You Did Last Summer, as well as with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for upcoming series Truth Seekers.

Tell us, though, what do you think of an Event Horizon TV show? As ever, let us know in the comments section below.
