Ruben Fleischer's Venom was a film that succeeded beyond all expectations, defying lousy reviews with its record-breaking run at the box office. So while the new Aquaman movie has benefited from a much stronger buzz than Eddie Brock’s solo debut, the fact that the feature has now surpassed the Tom Hardy-led flick in domestic gross is still nothing to be sniffed at.
As 2018 neared its end, Netflix gave us one last big pop culture moment in the form of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which drew attention and acclaim for its novel “choose your own adventure” format. But as well as freaking out many an actively engaged viewer, it seems the film inspired one Marvel fan to imagine what Avengers: Infinity War would be like if it offered the same level of interactivity.
It’s now been over a decade since the last Indiana Jones movie arrived in cinemas, and almost three decades since the release of the last movie that most fans actually like. But while it’s still at least a couple more years before we find out if Indiana Jones 5 fares any better with viewers than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Netflix users now have the opportunity to revisit the entire saga thus far.
The new Aquaman movie passes yet another commercial milestone, with Arthur Curry’s solo debut now standing as the highest-grossing DCEU entry at the international box office.
As the release of Avengers: Endgame looms ever closer, fans are turning to Mark Ruffalo in the hope that he’ll share just a little bit of accidental intel on the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War sequel, and though it’s been a while now since the actor has dropped one of his patented spoilers, a new tweet has some of his followers thinking that he may be about to crack.
When it comes to the medium of film, it hasn’t exactly been plain sailing for DC in recent years, but the ongoing success of Aquaman ensures that the brand is starting off 2019 on a strong note, and Warner Bros. no doubt intends to keep that momentum going with the various features they have coming our way.
Career-wise, Dwayne Johnson is pretty much untouchable right now, with recent blockbusters like Rampage and Skyscraper defying mixed reviews from critics to find box office success. Even his last commercial misfire, 2017’s Baywatch, was sandwiched between two of the year’s biggest hits – specifically, The Fate of the Furious and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. With all this success, Johnson is in a very good position to take in stride any roasting that comes his way, and you can definitely see this in his cheerful response to receiving a Razzie Award.
In a combination of star and project that feels weirdly appropriate when you think about, Bruce Campbell is set to host the new Ripley's Believe It or Not! show, which is due to air on the Travel Channel later this year.
In what’s set to be an exceptionally busy year for superhero movies, DC’s Shazam! faces a bit of an uphill battle standing out amidst some highly anticipated releases, but with a second major trailer soon to drop, Billy Batson’s big screen debut can hopefully make a case for itself as more than a fun but inessential little flick to fill the waiting period between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.
If you’re reading this, then chances are you’ve already seen The Dark Knight, with Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film scoring huge numbers at the box office and earning a level of acclaim from the critics that you rarely see for the superhero genre. But if you’d care to judge for yourself whether the movie is still as great as everyone said it was, the second instalment in Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is now available on Netflix.
