With the social media embargo recently lifting on Aquaman, we’ve seen an array of promising responses to Arthur Curry’s standalone debut, with several early viewers going as far as to call James Wan’s flick the DCEU’s best offering to date. So far, so good, but one man who’s currently unable to vouch for the quality of this upcoming release is the film’s own star, Jason Momoa, who recently admitted that he still hasn’t seen his latest movie.
For all the speculation around Avengers 4 and the many details that directors Anthony and Joe Russo are refusing to share, it’s easy to forget that even this filmmaking pair don’t know the exact content of the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, with the movie currently in post-production and with some way to go before it arrives at its final form.
Avengers: Infinity War teased the potential for 14,000,605 possible futures, but back in the film’s early stages of development, there were apparently just three radically different paths that the team were considering, and one of them would’ve put us right in the head of the Mad Titan himself.
Given how many major comic book characters Warner Bros. has access to, the DCEU can hardly be blamed for mostly keeping its focus on figures who'll be familiar to your average filmgoer, but with this newly announced Blue Beetle film, the studio looks set to break from that habit while also providing us with the first major Latino superhero movie lead.
Avengers 4 co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo seem to take pleasure in keeping us in the dark about the grand finale of Marvel’s Phase 3, but on the subject of MCU events beyond 2019, the filmmaking pair probably aren’t entirely clued in themselves. Specifically, when it comes to the possibility of the X-Men and various other Disney acquisitions being introduced into the saga, the Russo Brothers have apparently been left to speculate just like the rest of us.
A few months ago, a rumor started making the rounds that Warner Bros. is on the lookout for a “Kristen Stewart prototype” to play Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, in the DCEU. And while we still haven’t had any official confirmation of such an idea, Twitter user and regular leaker @DanielRPK is doubling down on the notion with a new post that shares excerpts from a document with this exact casting description.
After Justice League failed to provide the franchise with its big Avengers moment at the box office, it was clear that the DCEU was in trouble and in need of some reorientation, but with strong reviews and an impressive opening weekend predicted for the upcoming Aquaman, there’s a chance that this superhero saga might pull through after all.
A lot of people die in Avengers: Infinity War, and while it’s clear that most of these fatalities will be reversed in next year’s Avengers 4, a few deaths are arguably looking a little more real and permanent.
Marvel Studios has been disproving a lot of fan theories in these last few days, from alleged Avengers: Infinity War Easter Eggs to the internet’s many predictions on when the first Avengers 4 trailer might drop, but now director Joe Russo has probably helped spawn a whole new line of speculation with his tease that Chris Evans still has a future in this franchise.
Avengers: Infinity War ended on an optimistic and life-affirming note, so long as you’re watching the movie from the perspective of its leading man Thanos, and after two-and-a-half hours of experiencing the Mad Titan’s difficult but ultimately triumphant journey, audiences were sent into the film’s ending credits with a smile across the villain’s big, purple face.
