After a rapturous response following its Cannes debut earlier this year, Foxcatcher has hit all the major film festivals and spawned a similar reaction. Even though a theatrical release is still a month away, Bennett Miller's true story feature has already garnered enough positive press that awards consideration chatter has begun. The Moneyball and Capote director has assembled a crop of stellar talent to tell the bizarre story of Olympic Wrestling brothers Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), and their unorthodox relationship with their coach (Steve Carell.)
This past summer Marvel's Cinematic Universe took things up a notch, and managed to satisfy die-hard fans and newbies alike with Guardians Of The Galaxy. It set the box office alight and receiving lashings of positive critical acclaim for its quirky approach to superheroes wrapped around a wham-bam of impressive set pieces. While the main bulk of the film won people over before the credits, there was one little guy who stole everyone's hearts riiiiight at the last second. Groot. Or should we say Baby Groot. The former trunk-turned-twig completely dominated the end credits with his adorable dancing. Now it looks like they've heard the fans cry out for one of their own!
While it might have the bigger cultural cache, the San Diego Comic-Con isn't the only annual con to dish out news on exciting new projects. Since sci-fi hit The X-Files catapulted Gillian Anderson to a life-changing level of fame, she has remained dedicated to the small screen. As the level-headed Scully in The X-Files, The Fall's reserved and stoic Stella Gibson and her recent turn as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier in Hannibal, there's been a similar vibe to her characters. That's not to say she's at her best when playing to type - far from it - but simply that there's a commonality in her choices. But, it seems Anderson is up for a change of tone, as we've learned today that the actress would quite like to tickle your ribs for a role in the upcoming spook reboot, Ghostbusters 3.
If you like your fall TV viewing dark and ominous, then you're likely a fan of FX's hit anthology series, American Horror Story. For the last four years, the network has introduced audiences to the most repugnant side of human nature in a way that's utterly compelling. There's no show even remotely like it. From its anthology framework right down to the twisted storylines, it continues to set new trends. While new angles on serial drama have the potential to alienate audiences, creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have delivered to fans time and time again. And those fans have spoken... with their remotes.
The path to righteousness, awesomeness and most excellence has been paved with numerous problems. We're of course talking about the return of cinema's most bodacious slackers for Bill & Ted 3 . Most recently we heard from Alex Winters (Ted) that a completed script was in the bag, with the pair set to return for another dose of time travel tomfoolery. Despite Winters' optimism, there's still a ways to go before the film even approaches production.
