With less than a week to go until the second season premiere of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, it's fair to say that we're pretty excited. A few weeks ago, Dan Stevens teased the possibility of a sequel to Adam Wingard's 2014 picture The Guest. The cult favorite was recently added to Netflix, and is well worth a watch for anyone wanting to see Stevens as a U.S. soldier who unexpectedly turns up at a family's home. The actor doubled down on his interest in a follow-up to The Guest in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, albeit while still noting that his collaborators are pretty busy right now.
In a surprising move, the original three Jurassic Park movies are moving over to Netflix from Peacock at the end of this month. Given that NBCUniversal's Peacock only launched last week, it's a bit strange that they're already losing the rights to the three films. The new service, which is also losing The Matrix and Shrek movies at the end of the month, still have plenty of content to fall back on, though, as well as next-day streaming premieres of NBC shows.
We don't have long to wait now until the second season of The Umbrella Academy, which arrives on Netflix this July 31st. The series has been putting out some excellent promos and a trailer that promises a lot of time travel weirdness for the Hargreeves siblings. One of the more striking elements in the materials for season 2 though involves Klaus seemingly running a cult, and ScreenRant have a theory as to why this has happened.
After a brief drought in new programming, Netflix are back into adding fresh content and have several new movies and shows lined up for the week of July 20th to July 26th. With the likes of The Old Guard representing another original content success for the streamer, ahead of returning favorites like The Umbrella Academy, the platform continues to go from strength to strength. What new material can we expect, then, this week?
While season 2 of Star Trek: Picard is still presumably some way off due to COVID-19, there has been plenty of talk of what we could see in the series. We've already heard word of more Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members returning for the show, and that there'll be a greater focus on Starfleet than the first year. One question, though, is whether the series will do longer flashbacks, possibly opening the door for a younger actor to play Patrick Stewart's character.
In what's probably not going to be a surprise to most people, the amount of minutes spent streaming content has sharply risen during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a recent research study, between March 30th and June 7th, streaming minutes have grown by 85% compared to same period last year. With people unable to get out to enjoy entertainment, the time spent on Netflix and other services has increased by a large margin.
