Just when you thought the pirate trend had finally sunk with all hands, Michael Bay comes along. The visionary director/producer behind Transformers and The Island is now bringing us Black Sails, a Starz series featuring nasty pirates and buried treasure. Ahoy, mateys!
Things have not exactly gone well for Lindsay Lohan over the past few years. Her stints in drug and alcohol rehab, public breakups, and criminal charges did nothing for her once-promising career. Neither did her appearances in Liz & Dick or The Canyons - whoever advised her that it was a good idea to appear in a Easton-Ellis scripted film with a porn star has hopefully been fired. But Lohan is still trying to revive her career, no matter how dead in the water it seems to be.
In case you have not noticed, I am all kinds of excited for 300: Rise of an Empire. Greeks! Persians! Sea-battles! Rodrigo Santoro in gold-lame underwear! There are just so many things to love about this film, and it has not even been released yet. The trailers just keep on wetting our appetites for blood and battle, but thus far have been somewhat light in terms of the actual plot of the film. The latest trailer hopes to rectify that issue, although if you didn't know what to expect from this film by now, you haven't been paying attention.
Playing an icon must be difficult for any actor, but how much more difficult would it be if that icon is still alive? That's the challenge facing Miles Teller, who is now in talks to play Saturday Night Live funnyman Dan Aykroyd in the upcoming John Belushi biopic.
Stop whatever you are doing and SEIZE YOUR GLORY! I do not know what will happen if you don't SEIZE YOUR GLORY right now, but it will probably be bloody and in slow motion. At least, that's the impression that I get from the latest posters advertising Noam Murro's 300: Rise of An Empire, which feature that intense tagline and an angry Greek spraying blood everywhere.
Every year the Oscar nominations come out, and every year there are a few glaring omissions. Last year everyone had a fit because Ben Affleck (poor baby) did not get a Best Director nod for Argo. This year one of the biggest surprises (after Inside Llewyn Davis) was the omission of Robert Redford for All Is Lost, a film that raised a good bit of critical praise despite lacking a wide release. Redford himself seems pretty unsurprised by the snub, however, and he recently told journalists the reason why.
An enjoyable if uneven piece of entertainment, A Chorus Line sometimes misses the beat and sometimes comes in right on cue. Overall though, it's worth a look.
Years ago, we were introduced to a genius dog and his boy-assistant as they traveled through time and went to exotic locales. Mr. Peabody and Sherman were regulars on Rocky and Bullwinkle, giving generations a healthy dose of historical mumbo-jumbo and Cold War fun. Now, like their parent show, they have received their own film, updated to the contemporary time period and injected with some bright and shiny DreamWorks animation. The second trailer for Mr. Peabody & Sherman arrived today and unfortunately, I have to say, it looks quite disappointing.
Hey, remember when Hollywood made original films? No? True, it has been awhile. Instead the powers that be continue to recycle and reuse ideas and plot devices from the movie-making days of yore, preferring to spend money on reboots, remakes, and sequels rather than actually come up with something unique. The most recent entry into the 'unnecessary remakes' genre is Poltergeist, which finally has a release date for 2015.
Darren Aronofsky's Noah already has an impressive cast, and it has apparently just increased by one more. According to the director's Twitter feed (via /Film), Nick Nolte has joined the film as Samyaza, a member of the Nephilim "eleven foot tall fallen angels with six arms and no wings."
