Did you really think that we had heard the last of the Mandarin, Ben Kingsley's inspired not-so-villainous villain from Iron Man 3? If you were one of those people irked that Marvel pulled an about-face with the problematic character by making him into nothing more than actor playing a part, then you'll probably want to avoid All Hail The King, a one-shot short featuring the Mandarin/Trevor Slattery.
Despite some less than stellar outings in recent memory, Jason Bateman remains one of those actors you love to love. Usually charming, often likable, and every once in awhile a bit off-color, Bateman weathered the Identity Thief storm and came out more or less intact. With his directorial debut Bad Words coming to cinemas in March, we shall soon see whether or not Bateman is as good off-camera as he is in front of the camera.
I honestly never know how to feel about Adam Sandler. One minute he's hamming it up with his best buds in some of the most painful excuses for comedies ever to con their way onto a big screen and the next minute he's serious and honest and actually - God save us - a good actor. Having subjected us to a spate of simply awful comedies over the past few years, Sandler is returning to more serious fare with The Cobbler, a Walter Mitty-esque drama that will hopefully stretch his acting muscles once more.
Remember when everyone was talking about Ridley Scott's The Counselor, the film that was scripted by one of the finest living American novelists and starred a cadre of exceptional actors? Remember how disappointed people were when the film did not follow through on its promise? If you were one of those who expected more from the team of Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy, you're about to have a chance to see The Counselor as it was meant to be seen, with all the scenes that were edited out of the theatrical release.
Now that we've all recovered from our New Year's hangovers, we can get down to the really important things: potential Star Wars spinoff rumors. While speculation continues to be rife about 'who will play who' in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII (and by 'upcoming' I really mean 'more than a year away'), we should also turn our attention to those spinoff films that will be in the pipeline following the arrival of Episode VII.
At a time when Hollywood has grown increasingly concerned over box office returns and how to make the most out of their multiple franchises, it always helps when a financial magazine crunches some numbers for them. While Forbes Magazine cannot tell the studios what properties to invest in, it can give insight into who is most worth the money to headline those films. The surprise here is that the list is headed by actresses by a solid margin.
2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year for moviegoers. From films like The LEGO Movie and The Monuments Men, to the endless list of big budget summer releases, I'm sure that we'll all be kept very busy at the multiplexes. But for me the most exciting part of any new movie year is when the Criterion Collection announces their monthly titles. As they did the year before, Criterion recently published a charming drawing teasing some of their 2014 releases. Let the debates begin!
What's better than one movie about zombified Nazis? Two movies about zombified Nazis. The somewhat anticipated sequel to schlock horror fest Dead Snow is set to arrive sometime in 2014, bringing back some much needed zombie mayhem. Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead now has itself a trailer and it's pretty much what you would expect from a zombie Nazi black comedy.
DreamWorks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon proved that 3D technology can be put to remarkable artistic use. On the strength of that film, we have all been eagerly waiting to see if How To Train Your Dragon 2 can continue what its predecessor began and give us an animated film for the ages. With the full theatrical trailer hitting today, the answer seems to be a resounding yes.
After months and months of speculating who was going to included in the final cut of The Expendables 3, we now have the first teaser trailer for the film and it outlines exactly which action stars will be featured in next summer's hot release.
