There's a theory going around that Doctor Strange actually contains a nod to Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, which would mark the very first time the character has been alluded to in the MCU. The supposed easter egg in question occurs just before Strange falls victim to his life-altering car crash, when he's being told about a couple of potential new patients.
Welcome to the sixth episode of our new, weekly video show: Geek Out. We all know how busy the work week can be, and in the increasingly crowded space of comic book movies and the like, there seems to be a never ending stream of news flowing out on a day to day basis. Casting this, trailer that, rumor here, speculation there - it really does never end and can get very tiresome trying to keep up with it all.
For those of you who are into comic books, you're probably well aware of the fact that Wonder Woman is believed to have had same-sex relationships during her time on the island of Themyscira. It's never been explicitly stated in the source material, but the current scribe for the character, Greg Rucka, has made comments about it recently - and he's not the first writer to do so.
There was never any doubt in our minds that Marvel would have a hit on their hands with Doctor Strange, and as expected, now that the numbers are in, we can say that they're rather impressive. Picking up $85 million over the weekend at the North American box office, and another $118 million around the rest of the world, the film is now sitting pretty at a total of $325 million.
Deadline is reporting tonight that the Freddie Mercury biopic, which has been in the works for quite a while now, is springing back to life with news that director Bryan Singer and Mr. Robot star Rami Malek have boarded. Not only that, but the project (which is now called Bohemian Rhapsody) is being put on the fast track over at 20th Century Fox with producer Graham King stepping in to oversee everything.
The Wrap is reporting that Ciaran Hinds, perhaps best known for his role on HBO's Rome, has been brought on board to play Steppenwolf in Zack Snyder's Justice League. We've known for a while now that the villain would be featured heavily in the film, after making a brief appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and now we know who will bring him to life.
At this stage it'd really only be news if a Marvel movie didn't make a killing on its opening weekend, but Doctor Strange looks like it will almost certainly surpass initial estimates. The studio's next sure-to-be blockbuster is off to a flying start in North American theaters, pulling in $9.4 million from Thursday night preview screenings.
The seventh (and penultimate) season of HBO's ever-popular Game of Thrones continues shooting in a couple of different locations around the globe, but it's what's currently going down in and around the city of Seville, Spain that has everybody talking. We've already had confirmation of that highly anticipated face-to-face between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, but that pales in comparison to this.
Sony is apparently eyeing Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez to helm their sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which is going to be called The Girl in the Spider's Web. Variety is the one with the news, and they're reporting that Rooney Mara is expected to return as hacker Lizbeth Salander, with the film set to be based on the new novel of the same name by David Lagercrantz.
Marvel's latest sure-to-be blockbuster, Doctor Strange, isn't set to hit US theaters for another few days, but we already have details on one of the deleted scenes that could well wind up on the Blu-ray/DVD release of the movie. During an interview with Collider, director Scott Derrickson reveals that there wasn't really a whole lot of footage left on the cutting room floor, but does describe one excised moment that he really hopes fans will get to see one day.
